Weekly Washington: Craziest Weekend Ever!

photo uploaded to flickr by marabuchiThat's right folks. This may be the craziest weekend I can remember here in DC. Halloween is already my favorite time of year in Washington, and then we have the Rally for Fear/Sanity thrown in. It's going to be a busy one.

I thought about writing up a Rally Guide, but what's the point? Nine gagillion already exist and I have little to add. And if the mobs are too much, check out our Fear and Sanity sights throughout the rest of DC. (TBD)

Weekly Washington: Sex, Drugs and Cannibalism!

courtesy of DDOTWoohoo! Roll Call has a great write up of our very own Walking Shtick Tours! Unfortunately, it's behind a pay wall, but if any of you have coughed up the subscription fees, go read it! But a headline that reads "Tour Focuses on Sex, Drugs, and Cannibalism" is exactly the kind of press we're looking for.

So, you go to snap a picture of some building and, all of a sudden, a security guard wanders up and demands you stop, or asks you to delete your pictures, or just inquires why you want to take a picture of the building in the first place. It happens all the time in DC.Well, this week, a Federal government, once again, affirmed that there is nothing wrong with taking pictures of their (our?) buildings. In fact, while we're on the topic, the only folks who can now hassle you about pictures is the Pentagon, especially when you are at the 9/11 Memorial. Other than that, just politely talk to the guard and move on. If you a shutterbug and what to know where you stand legally, print out this handy guide before you come. (DCist)

Weekly Washington - Free Stuff!

photo uploaded to flickr by mr_mayerGreater Greater Washington and Georgetown Metropolitan share a great story of the Dumbarton Bridge, a fascinating bridge connecting Georgetown with the Dupont Circle/Kalorama area. Somehow they manage to discuss the history of the Bridge without once commenting on what color Roald Dahl painted the bison's testicles. Oh well.

Washington Post covers the latest must-see attraction in DC: Georgetown Cupcakes. I don't know what is the more annoying trend in DC right now: cupcakes stores or I-hate-cupcake-stores stories. Without comment, then.

Sizable chunks of the new Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial arrived in Baltimore this week after a 47-day voyage from China. The Memorial is set to open next year.

Washington, DC's Congressional Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton took the Architect of the Capitol to task for numerous safety and managment problems at the new Capitol Visitor's Center. Politico reports failures in emergency communications and protocals, as well as some more mundane quality of work issues. Expect hearings on this matter come September.

Weekly Washington : Lincoln and More...

It has come to my attention that maybe, just maybe, there are other news organizations covering items of interest in the Washington, DC travel and tourism world besides this humble effort. In that vein, I’m launching my “Weekly Washington” feature to let you know of some of those relevant items.
